COMMITTEES!!!!! The mere mention of the word generates as much enthusiasm as a government bailout. Many great ideas have died in committee. Many hours have been wasted by ineffective committees; committees without a clear purpose and measurable goals. We thought about using the term “Teams” but knew we wouldn't’t be fooling anyone. Instead we’d like to offer an alternative vision:
Committees can be the working force at the heart of an organization. Effective volunteer-based organizations are the result of effective committees.
Committee work saves time at board meetings by incubating ideas at the grassroots level. Matters can be researched and discussed in detail before they are brought to the board. Specialized skills of volunteers and board members are used to their full advantage. The work of the organization becomes more efficient.
A mission like ours has a lot of moving parts. Committees are the best way to separate these tasks into meaningful and manageable pieces. They allow more folks to get involved, expanding our support base. Committees build connections to the work of Habitat for Humanity beyond banging nails and hauling dirt.
There’s no better time to get involved with Habitat at the committee level. Our Building Committee met for the first time in March and is already busy working on permitting, house plans, contacting suppliers and related tasks in preparation for our summer build season. Likewise the Family Selection Committee is performing outreach and reviewing applications for the first of two homes in Cloquet.
In the coming months we’ll be forming committees charged with selecting future build sites, coordinating repair work for low-income homeowners, building support among the faith community, hosting special events, and most importantly providing support for our partner families.
As the Internet becomes a part of daily life much of the work that in the past required inconvenient meetings in musty locations can now be accomplished from the comfort of your home or the local coffee shop. They’ll be times to discuss vital issues and celebrate victories face to face. But the days of monthly meetings hashing over the same old problems are over.
If you are interested in supporting our mission through specific committee work please contact us at (218) 722- 3875 or email us at Volunteer Application Form and let us know your area of interest. Our committees are committed to making simple, decent, affordable housing a matter of conscience and action for everyone in Western Lake Superior.
- Site Selection - Investigate opportunities and evaluate existing lots.
Recommend build sites and rehabs based on cost of site prep, existing housing stock, neighborhood resistance, and other factors. Good fit for those interested in real estate, construction, and pleasant afternoon drives.
- Volunteer Support - Contacting interested parties and matching skills
and interests with opportunities to put their faith into action. Enlisting churches and individuals to support construction volunteers with beverages and snacks. Organize an annual thank you event for everyone who has helped us build hope one home at a time. Good fit for cooks (foodies), partner families, and organizers.
- Family Support - Serve as a mentor and support to partner families
striving to make it in these tough times. Reinforce the positive aspects of self-sufficiency by directing them to resources available. Good fit for those with social service and counseling experience and experienced partner families.
